Over 160,000 children stay home from school each day -afraid of being bullied -and it’s the 3rd largest cause of teen suicide. Shirley was a counselor and train-er on a suicide intervention for over 14 years. She helped found and di-rect the International Conference on Care & Kindness at the Crystal Ca-thedral for seven years. It was from that experience she decided helping young children understand what bul-lying is all about, how to handle and prevent it, and that this is the time to start making a difference. Under the umbrella of the SACK Foundation, the World Kindness Youth Confer-ence began. They started with only 135 children in 2004, and today they reach 4,000 fourth-grade students each year and teach them about be-ing kind to others during a day-long event in Corona. There are so many 4th grade students, the organization has dedicated two back to back days (2000 students at each day). For the past several years, this event has been held at Crossroads Church fa-cility. Shirley is quick to acknowledge that the success of the conference is due to the tremendous amount of volunteers that help with the plan-ning, days of event and procuring all items for the event. Shirley is an active member in Cir-cle City Rotary Club and participates with the International Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program. In addition she works closely with the Corona-Norco Unified School District, who nominated her for the Individual Anti-Bullying Award that she received at the 2014 National Conference on Bullying.
