November is National Diabetes Month B y s HirLey G Lass msn, rn November is national Diabetes Month and an appropriate time to increase your awareness about diabetes. When a person becomes resistant to insulin production and the blood sugar remains elevated they have a potential sign of diabetes but more lab work is needed for a definite diagnosis (Type two diabetes=causes, 2013). Many factors effect patients with diabetes such as stress, activity, diet, and weight management. There is no cure for diabetes but most people can manage their disease and live a normal life (family doctor/doctor diseases, 2014). Diabetes education should include be an ongoing process that people experience for a lifetime. A significant area of diabetic educa -tion includes stress management. People with high levels of anxiety have increased health risk which includes the elevation of blood sugars. There are deep breathing exercises and various forms of meditation that can be effective for stress reduction (family doctor/doctor diseas-es, 2014). Exercise is another effective method that relieves stress and benefits general health. Many diabetic patients benefit from exercise. Activity such as walking, running, or riding a bycicle increases insu-lin sensitivity so your cells are better able to assist the body to use glucose (sugar) for energy (Type two diabetes=causes, 2013). Increasing activity can be a tool to be used when your consumption of food has exceeded the recommended amount. Meal time does not have to be a negative experience for diabetics. Take the time to plan before you shop, stock your kitchen so everything you need for a quick meal is on hand. Make your plate half vegeta-bles and divide the other half of the plate into fifty percent protein and the other half complex carbohydrates. A healthy diet can help you maintain your goal weight (diabetes’symptoms-type, 2015). Weight loss is beneficial in the manage -ment of diabetes. People who are over-weight have added pressure on their body’s ability to use insulin to properly control blood sugar levels. When type two diabetics lose weight they gener-ally have a better control of their blood sugars. There is no cure for diabetes but weight loss is one of the tools to maintain health (Type two diabetes=causes, 2013). Everyone should increase their awareness about diabetes because much of the population is at risk. November is the month when national organiza-tions promote education and awareness about the disease. (Type two diabe-tes=causes, 2013) Most people have the potential to experience good health if they practice stress managements and follow the recommended dietary and activity guidelines.
