Stress…we all seem to have it once in awhile, and for some, it’s an ongoing battle. We are all aware of the tough times that bring about stress. But stress can even stem from good things in our lives as well. Maybe you recently got a promotion, but that comes with more responsibility. Maybe you just entered into a new relationship, but you are worried how things will go. Or your kid made the soccer team but now you will have to rearrange your schedule to drive him to practice and games. The good news it that you don’t have to live in a stressful state all of the time. Simple changes in your behavior, attitude and daily routine can eliminate stress and make you feel relaxed and calm once again. 1 Fatigue & Exhaustion – Are you are feeling overly tired, to the point where it is interfering with your daily activities and your normal routine? 2 Irritability – Are you anxious and irritable and just not quite your normal self? Are negative responses and actions being triggered by things that usually wouldn’t upset you? 3 Inability to Focus – Do you find yourself having trouble staying focused on even the smallest things and some of your more routine tasks? 4 Social Withdrawal – Are you withdrawing from friends, and avoiding activities that you would normally participate in? Do you find yourself wanting to “be alone” more than usual? 5 Depression – Are you feeling down, sad or lost? Is your ability to cope with normal, daily situations harder than usual? 6 Health Problems – Do you have headaches, backaches, chest pains, and/ or a change in appetite? 7 Sleeplessness – Do you find it harder than usual to fall asleep, and once you do, is your sleep interrupted throughout the night? 8 Anger – Are you having difficulty controlling your temper? 9 Anxiety – Are you worried about what tomorrow holds, rather than living in the present moment? Are you creating scenarios in your head of all that is wrong or that can go wrong, rather than focusing on what is good in your life right now? 10 Feeling Overwhelmed – Is everything just getting to you? Do you feel like your life is out of control? If you are experiencing several of these warning signs and feeling like your life is out of balance, you may need help finding ways to eliminate what isn’t working for you, while implementing new tactics that will change your mindset and outlook on life. A few tips to help you reduce stress are: Engage Socially - Spend time with close friends and family, even when you don’t feel like it, step out of your comfort zone and surround yourself with people who care about you. Get Moving – Engage in daily physical activity of some sort, even if it’s just taking a 15-minute walk. Eat Healthy – Eat a well-balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and drink plenty of water. Give Thanks - Take a few moments throughout the day to focus on all you have to be thankful for. 5. Laugh – Watch a funny movie or TV show. Laughter produces positive thoughts that release neuropeptides, helping to combat stress.
